Why legends?

The West Country is a land of myths and legends. English folklore is hardly better exemplified than in this vibrant, diverse and picturesque corner of the country. There are curious tales surrounding the mystic King Arthur, elusive beasts, mermaids, sea creatures, granite tors, fearsome pirates, smugglers, shipwrecks, ghosts and mysterious happenings. Of doubtful origin, numerous accounts which have been passed from generation to generation and embellished over the passage of time still abound today.

The West Country is also home to some of the world’s finest foods. Prevailing westerly winds with their oceanic influence create a unique climate where dairy farming thrives and orchards flourish. Apples, cider, pasties, fish, crab, sea salt, beef, strawberries, butter and clotted cream are all synonymous with this region whilst internationally renowned Cheddar cheese can be considered legendary.
